I have nothing original to say here, but I'm tired. I'm tired of being single and tired of being tired and tired of having defined my life by trying SO HARD and tired of not having the energy to live up to that any longer. I'm tired of being so cheerful about knowing my time will come, I'm tired of knowing that picking myself apart to see "what's wrong" doesn't do anything positive, I'm tired of being too emotionally mature/responsible/whatever to Allow myself to be "hopeless."

I'm sad and disappointed that despite everything, bitterness is finally getting to me. I'm suspicious and detached and I don't like those things. I don't trust most (single) men. These things are ultimately against my world view and personal inclinations but I guess it's all finally getting to me.

I've never worried about "eventually" and I still don't. I know my "eventually" is going to be with someone. I have faith in God and in men in general (?), but I. Am. Tired.

The worst part is, it's like being a girl on your period. All the other girls deal with it too, so there's generalized sympathy, but also generalized "we all have this. So don't sink too far into your pity party. We won't want to attend." Lots of people are single and want/deserve not to be.

I'm also just...hurt by the lack of space there is for me at church right now. I need to do my own thing and make my own space but I'm just. Tired. Last time I went I had to go outside to breathe because I just. Can't.

I'm tired of a building full of friendly faces that are also mocking. But not mean-spirited mocking? Just, friendly mocking that happens to cut me deep? I'm tired of not having the kind of control over my mannerisms and comments that I used to. I'm tired of neurological issues.

I'm tired of guys that either see past me or prey on me or think I'm just too (insert distancing adjective like "weird" or "quirky" or "intellectual" or "hyper" or "feminist" or "nerdy" or "awkward" or WHATEVER). I'm tired of being fun enough to laugh with until my mouth runs off with an awkward comment and then it's a light-hearted mocking comment and slick exit.

Like, do you not know that I know this isn't how I want to be? Do you not know that when I'm not nervous, I'm hilarious and sophisticated and down-to-earth and kind?

You guys, I'm so kind. No GUY cares about this and yet it will be such a blessing to whomever I marry.

I struggle with depression. I'm at a higher weight and in a less physically active lifestyle than I want. I don't spend money on eyelash extensions and I often am too tired or depressed to get up and do my own makeup in time. But I don't look at these things as permanent.

My kindness and empathy has always and will always be a core part of who I am. I can't wait to share it with someone. I can't wait to do little surprises that will light up their day. I get a literal thrill from doing special things for people I love and I just. Want. One. To be my home base guy. That I can come home and whine and complain to about the little things but more than that, find the things that make HIM happy and make each day a delight in a new way.

I'm good at that. I'm SO good at that. I'm NOT good at navigating single's wards anymore.

I don't want to have a guy be the "solution" to any of my problems but I don't think I should have to be perfect before a guy sees something in me. And by guy I mean man, not creeper, not codependent.

And it's always the same conflicting advice. Put yourself out there, look nice, feel good about yourself first. Don't feel like you have to do anything different, just keep being you, it'll come.

I don't think of myself as broken most of the time, and I'm not a naturally negative person. I'm just. Tired. I want to be held. I don't think that SHOULD be a shameful thing to admit. Yet here we are.

A SCIENCE Experiment

Soaking a book underwater! After leaving it in there a day or two we'll update you with further results. :)

Little Mermaid inspired scene

Sooooooooooooooooooooooo this just came into my brain last night and I had to write it up! Unlike the Disney version I imagine it’d take place around Jamaica-ish (or a fantasy equivalent). I’d definitely have to do WAY more research about the area and culture and imagine how I’d think that would influence the underwater culture, but hey! It’s a thought!

This is just a scene without a whole story to accompany it, but if you know the little mermaid it's implied! The Andersen version is about her wanting BOTH to marry the prince AND to have an immortal soul; the Disney version is JUST about wanting to marry the prince, so this one will be JUST about wanting an immortal soul. I’ll see if a romance crops up in my brain or not, but for now this is it as far as writing goes cause it’s definitely not on my list of writing priorities.

True story: my sister and I literally took a book I disliked and put it underwater so I could see how it would behave. I’ll link the video as soon as I put it up!

“Do you even know what ‘witch’ means?” the sea witch asked me. She traced a shell-like fingernail across the spine of one of her bound collections, mouthing the foreign title’s pronunciation.

A tremor wriggled its way through my body, making the webbing between my fingers flutter in the current. “It means…a woman who does magic,” I said, my gills contracting unevenly. I folded my arms tightly around my dark brown, scaled torso and flushed my fins forward so I could back away – subtly, or so I thought. “Evil magic,” I added in a mutter, avoiding her eyes.

The sea witch turned away from her shelves of accumulated records and gave me a long, unimpressed stare. Then she turned back to her books. “No.”

I waited silently, aware that I was very vulnerable, alone in her territory, asking for her help. I shook my head quickly making my clouds of floating, tightly curled, seaweed-textured hair billow around me. “What does it mean?”

“Well, scholars can never agree. People don’t keep track of their words, you see.” She pulled out several of those bound collections I recognized to be human books, handling them with a delicate touch. “A human once theorized it came from the Old English word wita, ” she explained, pointing to a certain page and then reading from it. “Which means… ‘to know.’ I personally liked that, but…”

The sea witch lifted another book, letting it drift in front of her. The shifting patterns of light drifting through from the surface played across the swishing page ends. “More likely, according to another humanic record, Deutsches Wörterbuch, it’s derived from the Proto-Indo-European root ‘weik-,’ meaning ‘to separate,’ or perhaps, as they say here – ”  She delicately thumbed through another book, careful not to further rip its fragile pages. “ – ‘weg-,’ which means ‘to rouse’ or ‘wake.’ Or in other words,” she finished, squeezing the pages slowly closed and back into their unnaturally flat, compressed shapes, “everything we do, everything we are, is about knowledge.”

“Knowledge,” I repeated blankly, my gills pulling oxygen from the water flow around me more consistently now that my heart beat had slowed.

“Yes,” the witch answered firmly. She spun slowly through the water toward me, keeping her eyes locked on mine even while she turned. “Simply put, we teach. You think you came to me because you want magic. But really, you want to be awakened. You want me to separate the truth from lies. You know that I have studied humans in the past, and have heard of these ‘immortal souls’ your grandmother spoke of.”

My throat felt oddly full. Grandmer had told me how humans cried, but we could not, and so we suffered more. I had been confused, but I wondered if this feeling was that…the desire to cry.

I pursed my lips. “Yes.”

Her eyes scanned me up and down, evaluating, searching for I don’ know what.

“Come,” she said finally. Her fins powered her upward. “I will teach you.”

Language as a Gatekeeper

Okay, so you know me. I am a LOVER of vocabulary. I love how the use of extensive vocabulary can be not only beautiful but full of specific meaning that simpler words can't quite capture.

But MAN! Sometimes, people get all into themselves over a discussion and start using highly specialized jargon and extremely elitist language and I all I can think is, "You know what? You're not actually contributing to your meaning or this discussion with this language. All you're doing is cutting out the people who don't understand those words, and 'proving' how superior you are."

I think that is total crap.

I had entered into an awesome and friendly discussion on a friend's FB page about evolution vs creation and if they were contradictory. It was really cool to see a FRIENDLY, open discussion on that subject, which can get really sticky! But ultimately, two guys ended up commandeering the whole discussion with their stilted language and oily attitudes and debates and definition arguments.

I bowed out. Because I don't think that helps anyone. By the time you've reached that point, you are limiting the conversation to two people who already are firmly entrenched in their opinions, and no one else reading is going to learn anything from it because they're using their language as a gatekeeper to filter out anyone not "qualified" to understand.

Well, here's what I think: use specialized language when it best serves your meaning, but in a situation like that? Explain for those who don't get it, if you've got to use those words! Right now is an exciting time where people who failed out of high school can get the equivalent of a college education online for free if they're disciplined enough, because the gatekeeping barriers of knowledge have been breaking down. The internet and social media have their down sides, but ultimately they've become the modern parallel to translating the Bible from Latin to English (William Tyndale is my hero <3) -  people can check it out for themselves instead of relying on the words of those from the ivory towers.

Well-educated people are sharing what they know casually and kindly. Previously uneducated people are learning quickly and providing incredible insight. Teenage girls, plural, are coming out with incredible inventions and discoveries, like (for example) a water wheel that also powers an mp3 player so women who used to have to walk for miles with a pot of water for their home can now carry gallons more AND learn as they go! People are inventing cheap microscopes literally made of paper so doctor's offices in poverty-stricken countries and areas can properly diagnose and treat their patients.

Some people feel threatened by the slew of free-flowing information, as if it somehow might invalidate their very expensive degree-obtained knowledge. I don't think it does. Some things you can only learn and understand by devoting so much time (and money!!!) to learning. But just because you did that doesn't mean you should use the way you speak to everyone else as a way to keep them out of the knowledge you gained. There doesn't need to be a division between the "wonderers" and the "instructors." We're all both.

Getting into an excited conversation with someone else who shares your specialized knowledge and feeling free to communicate with them is one thing. I do that all the time. Since finishing massage school I've been constantly using anatomy terms because they've become second nature to me.

But it is my hope that I will never, EVER, use those terms - that language - to purposely shut out people who haven't learned it. Or to make it seem like I'm somehow better than them. That's bull. I just happened to make a choice that brought me into a situation where I learned all of those things. And I'm happy to explain and share in layman's terms for anyone who cares to hear.

This has been an opinion.

Pre-Nano!

NaNoWriMo approaches! This is the year, I'm going to DO it! Here's a pre-nano challenge from tumblr user CassJayTuck:
"PRE-NANO CELEBRATION WEEK STARTS TODAY!

What is pre-nano you ask?

It’s this fun little day-by-day ditty we’re gonna do together to get us pumped for the big Nov 1st, when NaNoWriMo officially begins! The point of these particular tasks are to get you pumped for your project. Nothing technical, like outlining, just fun things that will inspire you and excite you for NaNo!

It’ll start tomorrow, at whatever time you please, and here are your instructions for each day:
Friday- What would the back of your book say if it were published? This can be anything. A synopsis, a “excerpt” you think might be in there, quotes from authors who loved your fantastic little book, etc.

Saturday- Create a playlist. Share a playlist of songs that inspire your story, or that your story inspires. Showcase one of the songs; the one that describes your story best.

Sunday- Make a book cover! Create a book cover for your story, just for the heck of it. Share it with us!
Monday- interview your main character. Choose 5-10 questions and answer them as the character!

Tuesday- A book is a movie in your mind, right? So show us the actors. Show us the actors who look most like your main characters! If you based them off of family, friends, or anyone else, you’re free to showcase them, too.

Wednesday- Interview your antagonist. 5-10 questions, just like before. If your main character IS your antagonist—yes, that’s a thing—then just pick another character.

Thursday- I kid you not, make a collage. Pictures, colors, the actors you chose earlier, song lyrics…do it. "

Friday: "Jaff begins the son of a General and cousin to his worst bully, the Crown Prince. As warfare and exile force him into the kind of confrontations he dreads, Jaff must discover and fulfill his purpose amidst his changing roles as slave in a foreign country, runaway and rebel leader, Seer to an unbelieving people, and key to an ancient prophecy he doesn’t understand."

How to Make Going to Church Awesome When You're Awkward/Shy/New/Have A Hard Time Feeling Comfortable

If you're me, all of these are guaranteed to help. If you're you, pick and choose what helps the most!

1.) Be on time.

Being late increases my feelings of awkwardness and makes it more likely I'll miss the Sacrament! It's true there's the issue of where to sit, but I'll get to that. Besides, when I'm on time I get to...

2.) Sing ALL the songs!

Which is possibly one of my favorite parts of worship services in general. I'm always sad if Sunday School or even FHE skip out on singing hymns. I particularly love singing the different parts (bringing the bass line an octave up, of course). Singing hymns automatically brings me into the moment, makes me feel engaged in the experience and a part of the ward.

3.) Share my thoughts.

Not a problem for me because, though I'm shy, I'm also expressive and can't help sharing even when I feel like a total loser on the inside. The key parts for me to remember are:

3a.) Don't be hyperaware of what impression I might make.

It's not about sounding smart, spiritual, in control or put-together. It's about how I might build up my own or others' testimonies by asking a question, or sharing a story/thought process.

3b.) Remember that I don't need to give disclaimers as a preface and/or excuse to what I'm saying.

3c.) I gain more when I'm willing to ask questions I don't know the answer to, and when I apply things to ME instead of "exhorting" others to feel or act a certain way.

4.) Unless it's one of those times when I need a little space, don't sit alone.

I have tendencies. I want to sit by and talk to certain people, but I'm too embarrassed to initiate said sitting/talking, so I'll sit alone. I have literally even been talking before class to people I desperately want to sit with, then hovered behind them when we file into class and found a place by myself so I'm not "pushing my company" on them by just sitting with them. And/or I go into my little detached La La Land, which is sometimes lovely and wonderful, and other times lonely and cold.

Instead of watching for the people I feel comfortable with and hoping they'll come take care of ME, I have better experiences when I watch for people whom I can serve and talk/sit next to them. :) this includes my visiting teachees, new members, new leaders, visitors, and other loners like me.

Caveat #1: though I'm expressive and loud, Self, remember that I'm an introvert and sometimes just need to not put out that effort. I'm always ok with others sitting by me, but sometimes I need to not push myself to initiate sitting by others.

Caveat#2: it's okay if I can't quite take off my "mask" around everyone. It's not a false version of myself, just a superficial protective layer (like skin) and that is natural and good. I don't need to fight it.

5.) Take notes.

I clearly process things best, receive more revelation, and remember things better when I write! I particularly like "T-charts" with "Principles learned" on one side and "inspiration" on the other. Designating space for inspiration invites it. I also do best with doodles, lists, self-evaluations (why do I...? How can I...this week?) and fear vs faith checks.

What are fear vs. faith checks you ask? Why I'll tell you! I heard that faith is the opposite of fear so I came up with this process. I admit and list my fears, (such as "I fear I'm not worthwhile" or "I fear I can't achieve everything I need to") and answer with a corresponding statement of faith, often accompanied by scripture or a line from my patriarchal blessing (such as "I have faith that the Lord only makes people who are worthwhile and I have a great deal to contribute to the world, 'remember the worth of souls is great,'" and "I have faith that the Lord will help me set priorities and accomplish what I need to, 'I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing he commanded them'").

6.) Come to Church for the Lord!

Often I focus a little too much on why I need Church. I have a much greater experience when I focus on why the Lord needs me and what I can do for Him. When I'm emotionally exhausted, I can come to church for me. But when I have anything available to give, I want to come for the Lord, and gift Him with the focus and worship he deserves. ESPECIALLY by making my worship center around partaking of His Sacrament.

***

And that's how, when I actually listen to my own advice (ha), I make coming to church great even though I'm shy and awkward and think too much. :D

Loves!

The Best Medicine!

Besides actual medicine - which I did find - is a fun-filled day of silliness and laughter with Savanna! Seriously, I don't think anyone else could've picked me up out of that low.

I feel so angsty lately! Let me just make a list of a few random things.

1. I misplaced my depression and anxiety medications 5 days ago and have been without.
2. I had to (at least temporarily) quit my job because I've been too sick.
3. I've been super-sick.
4. I hurt my feet really bad and have been literally unable to walk. Lame!
5. Feeling severely unwanted everywhere I go.
6. Money sucks and everything in life demands it.
7. I need to move and don't know where to go.
8. I got a milkshake and it spilled in my car, including on my purse
9. I picked up my purse from the bottom and everything spilled out of it onto the contents of the shake.
10. I got back to my apartment complex and saw that somehow I had dropped a bra on the blacktop and it had been sitting in the parking lot for who knows how long???
11. Finding it hard to feel positive, which sucks because I've always felt positivity is one of my defining traits so it's hard to even feel like I know who I am
12.
13. A random lady I don't even know decided she hates me because I tried to help out with a project and cut a piece out wrong (or something like that).
14. I have gained so much weight and I feel gross and unattractive.
15. I need my medicine and I hate that I need medicine. :(

Disclaimer I know I have good things going for me and people care about me blah blah blah etc and these feelings are not indicative of what most of my life has been like since last time I updated. It's mostly the lack of medicine, I'm sure. Just at a point where everything about myself and my life and even my relationships with the people I love makes me feel an excruciating sense of shame and embarrassment and self-loathing and I just want to cry all the time. I'll get over it.

My Baking Adventures!

So the reason the other post is called "more baking" is because I wrote this one on 3/6, but apparently it failed to upload...let's try again!

The last six months or so, I've done a lot of baking and taken pictures of it! Apparently moving to Utah does this to me. So I thought...I must needs share these things!

Ta da!

More baking!

These are all recipes from Pinterest :) the Cheez-Its are just from the Goldfish cracker recipe, but cut in squares! SO much faster.

In Response to Twilight: My Kind of Man

He had the classic look: smooth, clear skin that seemed to glow; a soft, smiling mouth and brilliantly-colored irises, hair styled as if he had just rolled out of bed, except every strand fell in perfect artistic symmetry with the planes of his face, etc, etc. And he was a vampire, did I mention that? The Twilight kind. Say what you will about them not being as great as your classic, fanged night-dwellers, but they're impressive to meet face-to-face.

This is what I’ve got in front of me: sparkling, bloodless conglomerate of everything we girls think we want in a guy. Take “vampire” out of the description and replace it with sensitive/rugged/brooding/charismatic/successful, or whatever we always want to find in a mate, and you see these guys everywhere – in fiction, anyway.

So I come up to this guy. Let’s say his name’s Edwin. And he’s flashing his pearly teeth at me, saying all these things about how he’s so entranced by and devoted to me but it’s too dangerous but he wants to know everything about me because even the middle name of my great-great grandmother is so fascinating to him and what’s my favorite color? Is it still my favorite color now? What will my favorite color be tomorrow? And oh my gosh, will he ever stop talking? He’s got all this hot’n’ready intensity over nothing. Like it’s been waiting to shoot out at whoever he decided was different enough from bland but more normal than spectacular and I just happened to be the person that fit the profile.

Whoops. I’ve been tuning out for like five minutes and he’s giving me puppy dog eyes, entreating me for an answer to whatever perfectly flirtatious-but-gentlemanly request he just made. I blink.

“Um, what?”

“Oh, you silly goose.” Edwin chuckles under his breath and shakes his head fondly. “That’s so like you – lost in all the beautiful thoughts floating around in that head of yours.”
He reaches his hand to brush my cheek – softly, I’m sure, because it’s always softly or tenderly or lovingly, one of those -ly words – but I grab his wrist and bat it away, impatient with pretty much everything about him. If I hadn’t been presented with so many versions of this kinda guy in entertainment lately, I probably wouldn’t be so annoyed with it now, I’m sure. Or at least I wouldn’t understand why he chafes at my last nerve.

“Just tell me,” Edwin finally says, leaning toward me. “Tell me something I can do to make you happy.” At first I want to sigh, but then an idea strikes me.

“Like what?” I ask, wondering how far he’s willing to go.

“Anything.”

I perk up.

“You really mean that?”

His face lights up with all the glory of the morning sun. Or evening sun. Whichever’s more glorious, I guess. “I do.”

Yuss.

I pump my arm in a cha-ching! gesture and pull out a huge, honkin’ horse syringe filled with human blood. “See you on the other side!” A grin splits my face and I plunge the needle toward his chest.

“What the – wait!” Horror-stricken, Edwin knocks my hand out of the way. “What are you doing?”

I lower the syringe and look straight at him, completely serious. “I’m making you real.”

“But – “ His mouth works for a moment. “But I am real.”

“No, you’re fiction. You’re the kind of fiction that young girls and desperate housewives dream about but no one really wants to live with. But this,” I say, gesturing with my syringe, “is full of blood – human blood! With all of its degenerative imperfections. That’s what I want from you.”

“But honey,” he says, and the simpering way he says it makes me shiver and twitch away. Which doesn’t stop him from taking my hand and holding it to his chest. “This is who I am. I want to be with you. Isn’t that enough?” Again, his pinkish lips toy with me in a soft smile. But no, that wasn’t enough.

“Look at me,” I say, “and look at you. Do you see a difference? Besides – “ I cut him off preemptively, seeing where he’ll go with that – “besides that whole I’m a normal human girl, you’re a monster inside deal. Look at me. I’m a person, not some kind of deity. You keep saying that’s part of what you love about me. I believe it. And underneath this sparkling layer of – of fakeness,” I say, waving my hand at his general appearance, “I think the real you might be someone I’d like to see. Is that so crazy?”

“But – ”

“I can’t promise I’ll love you as you’d become. But I do know…the version of you I see now? I can never really love. Not the kind of love I want.”

Edwin holds his breath, obviously struggling. I see panic in his eyes. I can understand that. After all, who doesn’t hide behind a mask of pretended perfection? The version of themselves they think everyone else wants to see? Who wouldn’t feel frightened at the prospect of losing that?

For the first time, I feel a real spark of empathy for him – maybe even a connection.
I wait.

“All right,” he says finally, blowing out all his breath. “I’ll do it.”

I lean forward and really look at him, though he attempts to avoid eye contact. “Thank you,” I say, and he glances up briefly. “It means more to me than I can say.”

Edwin’s mouth flickers into one last – admittedly dazzling – half-grin. “Just…try to remember me this way,” he says, as a last resort. I just smile myself, half-shaking my head, committing to nothing.

I blow out my breath. “Here goes nothing.” I give him a brief, tight hug. “For real, this time...see you on the other side.”

And so, I delicately insert the larger-than-life needle past his shirt, through his skin, between his ribs, and into his anxiously beating heart. I take a breath, then slowly, but firmly, push the plunger through the tube, expelling red, wet, very human blood into his system.

Edwin gasps – except it’s more than a gasp, it’s like a death rattle. But opposite. Because he’s finally coming to life. It’s his first breath of life in hundreds of years. I know I should keep my eye on blood level in the syringe, but I can’t help watching as he changes.

Most notably, first, his frame changes. There’s somewhat of a crunching noise as his spine shrinks and he falls several inches shorter, much closer to my height. At the same time, his shoulders curl into a natural hunch, probably formed from years of bad posture before vampirism automatically corrected it. His neck curls back, sort of the way a turtle’s might, so he can keep his head up even with his shoulders down.

I am not proud to say that, when a little bit of a gut rolls over his belt line, I want to flinch. But I know how carefully he’s watching me, now that I’m seeing what he really looks like – what he was willing to turn back to, for me. And I asked for imperfections, didn’t I?

I look at his hands. They somehow lose both their strength and their delicacy. Now they’re just…hands. With a little bit of man-hair creeping up onto the backs of them.

His clothing doesn’t drape so becomingly, either. The rumples aren’t artistic, but untidy. His shoulders aren’t so wide now, so the seams fall too far down his arms.
I’m noticing the weirdest little things just on those arms – a couple odd, dark hairs sticking out amongst the fair ones, uneven skin tone, ashy elbows, patches of rough bumps and a spattering of over-sized freckles – things that are normal in real life, but no one ever cares to mention in stories. Unless it’s on an unsavory character. Or an amusing one. Someone we are meant to dislike, laugh at, or look down on. What are we saying about ourselves?

And then I look up at his face. Now it’s my turn to gasp. Neither in pleasure nor displeasure, but sheer surprise is all. He’s still Edwin, but not the Edwin I’ve known. His jaw and bone structure has rearranged, a little less symmetrical. He’s smiling, insecurely, so I can see that he still has nice teeth, if a little crooked, but the chin beneath it is a bit weak. And his nose features a pretty large, protruding bump in the bridge. The skin in his T-zone has enlarged pores, and the rest of his face holds scattered pockmarks and acne. His mouth is thinner. One hair in his left eyebrow has grown out way too long. His hair, sans gel and magical vampire auto-arrangement, is just flat now. Still a bit mussy and curled, but the color is duller.

And his eyes – finally I meet his eyes.

They don’t dazzle. They’re not a clear blue, or green, or gray, or hazel, but a mix. Like the way a muddy lake might look if it were a cloudy day.

But for all that the color is clouded, I can finally, really see him.

You’d think, with all those imperfections I just described, that he looks like an ogre. Or at least one of those awkward, creeper Nice Guys ™ you try never to end up alone with at social functions. But he doesn’t. He’s not. He’s just…a guy.

I guess he can’t bear the silence any longer, cause he spreads out his arms and says, “So…what do you think?”

I withdraw my syringe and drop it, crossing my arms and tapping my chin. A chin which, by the way, aches from those obnoxious, deep, cyst-like pimples that don’t go away for weeks.
“I don’t know yet,” I say finally. “Talk to me.”

A bit taken aback, Edwin just shrugs. “What about?”

“I don’t know, what kind of stuff do you like to talk about?”

He makes an incredulous expression. “Don’t you know? I only spent an hour talking about architecture yesterday.” He laughs.

“Well yeah, but you made it all so obnoxiously poetic that it felt more like a show than a conversation, so I tuned you out!” I smile in return, satisfied. Cause I recognized in his laugh, at the corner of his mouth and the way it twitched his cheek a certain way, the part of him I’d liked to begin with. The display was smoother before, perhaps, but stifling the true art of it, like cheap plaster and paint put over a stone-cut wall.

It wasn’t how good the smile looked that mattered. It was the fact that the way his mouth moved reminded me of something I loved about him.

Here I’d thought I was coming along to teach Edwin this great big lesson about letting down his guard, and not being vain, and how if he did those two things he’d stop sounding like such a royal stickup. And now I’ve started putting together what might be a big part of the puzzle of my own love story. I mean, being attracted to each other is important…but that one part of that one way he just smiled is so much more compelling to me than  his entire same person being physically perfect had been. Why is that?

"So..."

Whoops. Zoning out again.

“Sorry, what did you say?” I ask, bringing myself back to the real world.

Edwin scuffs his shoe against the ground. He mumbles something.

“What was that?”

He glances up, then looks back at his toes and mumbles it just a bit louder, but still too indistinct to make out. I feel bad that I have to ask again. “Sorry…still didn’t catch that.”

His head is still tilted down, and his hands are thrust in his pockets, but this time he keeps his eyes directed at me. “Do you think you can love me now?”

I feel even worse than when I hadn’t heard him. It was such a plaintive, simple question, so much simpler than my emotions ever are. The honest answer is, I don’t know. Can I? Sure, he seemed a bit humbler now, but how long would that last? Would he still treat me like some kind of doll? And I can’t just tell him I don’t know.

Can I?

“I don’t know,” I confess. Predictably, he looks crestfallen. Like the weight of the world just fell on his shoulders, and all of this was for nothing. It sears my insides just to see, and I feel like an awful person.

“Kay,” he says, and starts to turn away.  If I hadn't seen something in his smile before - something that clued me in to the fact that hey, maybe there was something inside I actually might enjoy about him - I probably would let him keep going.

“Hey, Edwin?”

“Yeah?” He turns back hopeful.

“I still don’t know,” I warn him, before he gets too excited. “But I do know that I want to figure it out. Wanna go on a date with me?” I hold out my arm, to his surprise.

“Right now?” he asks, awkwardly threading his arm through mine, unsure the angle his arm is supposed to go when being escort-ee instead of escort.

“Why not?”

“Where?”

I shrug. “Wendy’s?”

So we went. And a week or so later, we went on another date. And another.  And now we're going out, and see each other pretty much all the time.

Is it going to work out? Honestly, I don’t know. But if it ends, even if we need to not hang out around each other for a while, I hope we end up friends after it all. Cause now that there’s not a cardboard cutout in the way, I’ve finally realized – I really, really like Edwin.

Another Meditation on Cinderella

I thought of it right before I fell asleep last night and said it to myself over and over so I'd remember. I didn't remember until I was just finishing reading a book (Enna Burning by Shannon Hale, she's my new favorite) while I ate breakfast.

*

The clock is striking 1 a.m.

My skirts are too big for the door
Inside, the silver silk looks gray and dull.
The prince's eyes were cold and hard
The slippers shattered as I ran
I pull glass slivers from my bloody feet.

Love Again

Happy Valentine's Day! Or as I'd say to my good friend Jeremy, Hap Peeve Allen Times'd Hey!

This year the theme for my life seems to be love in the form of serving. Last week I visited our Bishop's wife for 3 hours. She has a very rare disease but basically she now has very reduced physical and mental abilities. His love for her is amazing. She is his sweetheart in every way, and that didn't change when she started changing. But she's just so happy, and sweet, and always willing to talk! We watched "Emma" with Gwyneth Paltrow.

Then yesterday I helped my roommate embroider a pillowcase for her boyfriend. It was super fun teaching her how to do a simple stitch and then working on the Superman "S" myself! I ended up staying up until 3am last night and waking up at 8:30 am to work on it again until 10:30am. So at a time when I've struggled to wake up in general, that's what I figured out motivates me - showing love by service :)

The finished pillowcase! Katalina did most of his name and I did the symbol. All in ONE night!

Hope you're all having a happy holiday, and not feeling all embittered! Commercialization of a holiday doesn't bother me because it's still a day to feel, and make others feel, special. Always awesome!

For a while everyone was out and I had the apartment to myself. I gave my roommate Bristine a special massage with candles to make her feel better from violin practice ALL DAY, then I brought the candles and music into the main room and made these strawberry-shaped cake pops and wrote a letter to my future husband. It was AWESOME.

How was your day?

<3

If I ever wrote a story about Rapunzel

She would have short hair, but magical powers that make it shoot out super-long and she could control it like tentacles. It'd be sweet.

Also her hair would not be blond.

Oh P.S. I moved to Utah! Drove here all by myself in my minivan with a good number of my belongings. And successfully graduated yay.

Great Advice

This blogger was talking about how the phrase "friend-zone" is offensive, which I totally didn't get at first, but now I do - ask in the comments if you're interested in that! But point being, I responded with a question about how to help deal with my fear of "leading someone on." I loved her response:

"When it comes to ‘leading someone on’, know that it’s not actually something you can do. That’s a myth. How someone else interprets your actions is on them. How they respond is on them. You just be you in the most positive way possible. If that means letting someone down, let them down. If it means going on a date to make up your mind, that’s fine too. That’s what dates are for. When you make up your mind, your choice is good. Just because it’s not what the other person wants doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to make it. Especially when it comes to starting a relationship.
It is good though that you’re being honest and communicating. The best thing would be to get to a place where you can feel comfortable telling your date that you’re on the fence about them. This guilt over your choice shouldn’t be. You own you. You should look after your best interest. A good friend, a good partner, will respect that. You deserve that."

AWESOME.

Now, I do think "leading someone on" is possible, not in that you can control how someone perceives your actions, but if you're actively trying to be deceitful about your intentions. But that's not something that's a problem for me. So basically...I can let go of that! Let that one fly off like a balloon the moment it's released.

PHEW. Feels good.

SCHOOL ALMOST DONE AGH YAY

Okay okay okay I am FREAKING OUT WITH JOY! aghghghallalalalala yaaaaaay!

Not ONLY am I done WITH MY ENTIRE BACHELOR'S DEGREE except one harp lesson and one class/its final (!!!) but I've been reviewing my GPA stuff and grad school options! And I THOUGHT MY GPA WAS SO MUCH WORSE THAN IT REALLY IS!!!!!!!!

In my mind I kept counting my medical withdrawal stuff as 0s, but they just don't count, period. ALSO, I keep basing where I think I'm at by how I felt I was doing at the time I took the course - so I assumed my major-only GPA was way worse because so much panic went into writing the papers and I only remembered the stress and missed deadlines. Also I've been sure all semester that my science class was going to be a C. As it really stands, if I skip the final ENTIRELY I still have a B! Which I of course WILL NOT DO because now I have the shiny golden prospect of an *A* peeking out from among the clouds.

POINT BEING my graduating cumulative GPA is going to be 3.31-3.36 no matter what I do, and though that's not up to my usual standard, it's NOT BAD! And my MAJOR'S GPA is going to be a 3.7 - the only two Bs being because of the post-anxiety-attack stress stuff I was still recovering from. So WOOOOOOOO! I feel GREAT! And, okay, I'm planning on applying to graduate school, of course...but I keep being like "well, I'm not going to get another loan and I don't have money, so I'll just have to work and wait." But it turns out, if I apply for joint MFA/PhD programs, you get all sorts of fellowship nonsense that covers the first two years or so of tuition and pays additionally!

And I was reviewing the requirements for the creative writing program at Cornell and it's like the application requirements were MADE FOR ME (or at least I feel so now, in my giddy state). They include a creative writing sample of about 10,000 words and a literary critique-y essay of 3,000-5,000 words. I happen to have two things of the appropriate length on hand that just need some sorting through and refining! One, excerpts from the story of my HEART that I've been working on since I was 12, and which received the most positive reviews in workshops that I've EVER gotten, and the other, two papers on Milton's Paradise Lost that my teacher encouraged me to combine and seek critical publication for. I mean obviously it's not like I feel like "awwww yeah, Cornell's gonna love me, I'm so getting in!" but I'm encouraged to know I have stronger things to bring to the table than I ever thought.

 So.

Yay!

2 days until my last class
3 days until my last harp lesson
7 days until my last final
12 days until my graduation

Another Random Thing I Thought As A Child

I remember when my little sister Lindsay found out that for us girls, our last name changed when we got married. I already knew that, so when Lindsay ran up to me at church all in a tizzy about it and said, "did you know your NAME changes when you get married?!" I thought she was presenting NEW information - that we ALSO get to change our first name!

I was wondering if we got to pick our own. I was thinking Melissa or Rachel. Surprising, because I adored the name Nicole and had been planning since forEVer to name my daughter Nicole and thus named all my favorite (brunette) dolls Nicole. But maybe it was just so fixed in my mind as my daughters name that I couldn't think of it as my own, though that didn't stop 8th grade me from designing an alter-ego named Nicole Booker, a librarian and novelist with curly, medium-dark brown hair who always wore very flattering fitted sweaters and glasses (this was before I wore glasses).

Anyway. It was while I was considering other names that I realized how much I loved Lauren Elise. I asked Mom if I could keep it. I already suspected I was wrong about the first name change anyway, but I don't think Mama pointed it out, just said yes, I could stay Lauren.

:)

BTW my niece Nicole, I think my loving your name so much before you were even born just shows how much I loved you already!

A Hawaiian Break is Before Me!

OUT of school and prepping for my flight out to Hawaii! Finding my phone will help, of course, lol. I look forward to lots and lots of reading/writing time on the beach, lots of relaxation with my brother and sister-in-law, and...well...that's pretty much it!!!! Except I do have to bring some homework :/ Boo.

Hopefully I'll take pictures! If so I'll share them :)
